''The Battle of the Bands'' is a lively, fun musical for Middle Schoolers to perform with a positive message about the benefits of joining in a group activity for the good of others. It focuses on the ups and downs that Haley, an eighth grader, experiences as she leads the effort by her school to stage a Battle of the Bands, with all proceeds going to the winning act's chosen charity.

In desperate need of one last act for the Battle, Haley asks Todd to sing, even though he's not a band. He agrees to, but only if Haley will kiss him, even though she has a boyfriend. This, along with the way her two best friends quit, presents quite a challenge for Haley to surmount. But through determination, keeping a positive attitude, quick last-minute thinking, and the help of a few Groupies, Haley learns what it takes to make an endeavor like the Battle a success.
''The Battle of the Bands'' has:
- a strong female lead;
- eleven other principal roles;
- a cast of extras as large as the director would like to
          make it; and
- many roles which aren't gender sensitive, able to be
          changed at the director's discretion to reflect
          the girl to boy balance of your theater group.

Middle Schoolers get to play characters their own age in ''The Battle of the Bands'', unlike most musicals they perform in, where they are either imaginary characters or adults. ''The Battle of the Bands'' alternates between ''behind the curtain'' realtime scenes and flashbacks, keeping the pace of the musical lively. It is low-cost to produce, written so it can be performed on an open stage with minimal sets and props if desired.

With fourteen musical numbers, ranging in tone from pop to classical to jazz, ''The Battle of the Bands'' gives performers ample opportunity to express themselves. Parents will have a wonderful chance to see their children shine while enjoying the music, the plot, the humor and the spectacle.

NOTE: ''The Battle of the Bands'' is written so no actual ''bands'' perform. The three acts seen by the audience as part of the Battle are a female group number with chorus (''The Butterfly Anthem''), a male group number (''I Can't Believe That You're Gone'') and a male solo (''When I Think About You'').
